Yesterday, I travelled to Darlington to the head office of the “Master Photographers Association” (MPA), and I’m delighted to say that I have now achieved my Licentiate qualification.
The MPA is the UK’s leading qualification body exclusively for the professional wedding, portrait and commercial photographers. Established in 1952, the Master Photographers Association is one of the longest standing photographic associations in British history. Its mission is to support, grow, and educate the values of professional photography.
After joining the MPA last year, I have been keen to work towards my qualification since this is an “internationally recognised qualification of excellence”. Despite my studio being flooded back in December ’16 and being unable to work in it for almost 6 months, I’ve continued to progress towards this goal.
To achieve my qualification I had a panel 20 of my images made up from five prints from two portrait sessions showing a variety of work and then ten additional images from ten separate portrait sittings. This panel was combined along with a workbook (covering various aspects of my business such as my background, my goals and ambitions for the future, and health and safety).
To be honest, I didn’t sleep much the night before. Arriving at the MPA office I handed over my panel and workbook, which was taken away for judging. It was a nerve wracking experience waiting to be called in for the decision. After about 20-30 minutes I was called into the room and given the good news that I had passed, being told my panel was “very strong”.
I was then given a brief critique all of my submitted images.
These two Images were pointed out as being my strongest…
I’m excited to now not only be able to call myself a “qualified photographer”, but also a “Master Photographer”.
Achieving my qualification, has been an exciting time, and now I’m looking toward the future with some excitement too… I’ve always been interested in learning as much as I can, reading books, attending seminars and now I have a new goal to push myself forward to achieve.
Below is my complete 20 image panel submission.
